This volume contains the proceedings of the 21st Annual International S- posium on Algorithms and Computations (ISAAC 2010), held in Jeju, Korea during December 15-17, 2010. Past editions have been held in Tokyo, Taipei, Nagoya,HongKong,Beijing,Cairns,Osaka,Singapore,Taejon,Chennai,Taipei, Christchurch, Vancouver, Kyoto, Hong Kong, Hainan, Kolkata, Sendai, Gold Coast, and Hawaii over the years 1990-2009. ISAACis anannualinternationalsymposiumthatcoversthe verywide range of topics in algorithms and computation. The main purpose of the symposium is to provide a forum for researchers working in algorithms and the theory of computation where they can exchange ideas in this active research community. In response to the call for papers, ISAAC 2010 received 182 papers. Each submission was reviewed by at least three Program Committee members with the assistance of external referees. Since there were many high-quality papers, the Program Committee's task was extremely di?cult. Through an extensive discussion, the Program Committee accepted 77 of the submissions to be p- sented at the conference. Two special issues, one of Algorithmica and one of the International Journal of Computational Geometry and Applications,were prepared with selected papers from ISAAC 2010. The best paper award was given to "From Holant to #CSP and Back: c DichotomyforHolant Problems"byJin-YiCai,SangxiaHuangandPinyanLu, and the best student paper award to "Satis?ability with Index Dependency" by Hongyu Liang and Jing He. Two eminent invited speakers,David Eppstein from UniversityofCalifornia,Irvine,andMattFranklinfromUniversityofCalifornia, Davis, also contributed to this volume.

Description

George Pinckard (1768-1835) was an army surgeon who arrived in the West Indies in 1796. His letters to a friend were published as Notes on the West Indies in 1806; a second edition came out in 1816. Having been separated by bad weather from the fleet and arriving long before his regiment, he had plenty of time to explore Barbados, which he describes in detail in Volume 2. He is critical of the treatment of some slaves which he witnesses, but seldom questions slavery itself, and considers that, under a good owner, slaves were better off than they would have been in Africa; however, he found that elderly slaves who could no longer work were badly neglected. As a doctor, he is interested in illnesses suffered on the island, such as elephantiasis and yellow fever, and he also describes an expedition to Dutch Guiana.

This monograph is devoted to an entirely new branch of nonlinear physics - solitary intrinsic states, or autosolitons, which form in a broad class of physical, chemical and biological dissipative systems. Autosolitons are often observed as highly nonequilibrium regions in slightly nonequilibrium systems, in many ways resembling ball lightning which occurs in the atmosphere. We develop a new approach to problems of self-organization and turbulence, treating these phenomena as a result of spontaneous formation and subsequent evolution of autosolitons. Scenarios of self-organization involve sophisticated interactions between autosolitons, whereas turbulence is regarded as a pattern of autosolitons which appear and disappear at random in different parts of the system. This monograph is the first attempt to provide a comprehensive summary of the theory of autosolitons as developed by the authors over the years of research. The monograph is comprised of three more or less autonomous parts. Part I deals with the physical nature and experimental studies of autosolitons and self- organization in various physical systems: semiconductor and gas plasma, heated gas mixture, semiconductor structures, composite superconductors, optical and magnetic media, systems with uniformly generated combustion matter, distributed gas-discharge and electronic systems. We discuss feasibility of autosolitons in the form of highly nonequilibrium regions in slightly nonequilibrium gases and semiconductors, "hot" and "cold" regions in semiconductor and gas plasmas, static, pulsating and traveling combustion fronts.

I wrote A Gift of Love because people kept asking me to do so, telling me that there was a great need for it. Perhaps it was their parents who were dying, or another family member, or a close friend, and they needed to know what they could do for their loved ones in those last weeks, days, or hours. They knew that I had worked with Mother Teresa as a volunteer in her homes for the dying, and had twelve years' experience in what they were facing perhaps for the first time, and asked me to pass on some of my knowledge. In 1979, when I saw a magazine photograph of one of Mother Teresa's volunteers carrying a dying man in his arms, I knew in an instant that I had to become a part of this work. It was certainly not a religious calling, but a simple calling to give something of myself to others. I felt that if I could comfort one dying person, my life would have had purpose. It took me ten years to enter the world that I had only seen a glimpse of in that magazine article. When I did, it was during the worst of the AIDS crisis in the United States, in a hospice called "Gift of Love" in New York City, which had been opened by Mother Teresa in 1985. It had room for fifteen dying men, most of them from a world I had never known?a world of drugs, poverty, and crime, a far cry from the privileged life of chateaus in Europe that I had been brought up in, and later on, the world of show business in which I had been able to fulfill some of my greatest dreams. In the years to come, these men, who were dying of AIDS and had never been given much of a chance in life, taught me not only about the many ways to help others die in an atmosphere of peace and love, but also how to enjoy the richness of living our lives fully until the very end. Whenever Mother Teresa asked me to sing for her on her little terrace in Calcutta, I never said "No." And when I asked her to help me write about caring for loved ones in their last days, she also never said "No." What a blessing--thank you, Mother! If I can reach just one person who is flailing around in panic and fear while trying to help a loved one at the end of their life, my journey will have been worthwhile.

And these diaries also reveal her emergence as a writer: the bedtime stories she invented for her daughter during this terrible period eventually became Pippi Longstocking, one of the most famous and beloved children's books of the twentieth century.
